Rumour: GameCube games can be downloaded on Wii U

News about the Wii U has been constantly appearing since it’s initial reveal at E3 2011, during Nintendo’s Press Conference.  The latest rumour suggests that GameCube games can be downloaded off a Virtual-console-based online service on Wii U, which makes sense considering the system will not be backwards compatible with GameCube discs.

The rumour was initially sparked when Amber McCollom of Nintendo of America stated to an interviewer – “a number of the games that were playable on GameCube can be downloaded from WiiWare.”

This is not, however, a confirmation of any sort.

UPDATE: Nintendo does not deny downloadable GameCube games – “To clarify the capabilities of the Wii U system: As correctly stated, Wii U will not play Nintendo GameCube discs, however Nintendo has not made any announcements regarding downloadable content.”
