Nintendo E3 2012 Predictions

Folks, it’s that time of year again. E3 2012 is right around the corner, and it shows, what with all the articles, forum threads and leaks. Now it’s our turn to share our predictions on what the big ‘N’ will be revealing this year, and give our verdict on such matters as the number of controllers supported and the possibility of a name change for the Wii U. But there is only really one question: Is your body ready?

Every year, Nintendo’s press conference, like most others, has obvious announcements, and surprising ones. Here we will speculate on both; from those as certain as Mario is jolly to those as outlandish as Bowser’s motives. We will share our thoughts on all things; hardware and software, new games and old games, the 3DS and the Wii U. So without further ado, in the words of our faithful hero, ‘Here we go!’

Sure thing:

  • Pikmin 3 will be officially revealed with a trailer and some live multiplayer gameplay, for the Wii U.
  • Retro’s unannounced project will be revealed as an epic Wii U game (possibly Metroid Prime 4 – but we think otherwise).
  • Animal Crossing 3DS, Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Paper Mario 3DS will get solid release dates and perhaps a trailer.
  • Nintendo will brag about Wii’s lifetime sales but admit that sales have sharply declined in recent times. They will then explain how this will be avoided with the Wii U.
  • Various third-party representatives will appear on stage to talk about the Wii U.
  • Super Mario Bros. for Wii U/3DS will be officially revealed with some gameplay footage.
  • A show-reel will boast great third-party support for the Wii U, showing gameplay from such multiplatform games as Assassin’s Creed 3.
  • The Wii U’s NFC function and online capabilities will be properly explained, with perhaps an insight into the system’s OS.
  • New 3DS exclusive games will be revealed including a Dragon Quest game and Monster Hunter 4.
  • A quick word will be made on Zelda/Smash Bros. for Wii U, but no footage or images shown.
  • Either F-Zero or Star Fox will be announced for Wii U.
  • Monolith’s secret project will be revealed.
  • At least two new IPs will be shown off – one aimed at the masses and one aimed at the core gamer.
  • Wii U’s ‘Wii Sports’ equivalent will be revealed.
  • Plans revealed for Kirby’s 20th anniversary.
  • Wii’s price will be cut from $149 to either $129 or $99.
  • Confirmation that Unreal Engine 4 works on Wii U.
  • Confirmation that Call of Duty Black Ops 2 will be released on Wii U.
  • A new Zelda game for 3DS.
  • Details on 3DS/Wii U cross-play functionality.
  • Some Wii U hardware details (but no processor/GPU) such as built in memory (our money’s on 8GB flash), backwards compatibility, etc.
  • Support for two Wii U tablets confirmed.
  • New exclusive games coming for download to eShop.
  • Wii U’s online store will be available at launch with support for downloads of retail games.
  • Pokemon will be there in some shape or form.
  • New Donkey Kong or Wario game.
  • Nintendo announce list of first-party launch-window titles for Wii U.
  • Some kind of system update for 3DS which adds new features.
  • Wii U controller shown in it’s final form.
  • Wii U 2012 release date confirmed (but no specific day announced)

  • 3DS redesign revealed with longer battery life, improved cameras, slimmer design, dual slide pads and more.
  • GTA V shown with Wii U exclusive content.
  • Valve/Crytek working on exclusive game for Wii U.
  • Limited free games can be downloaded from eShop.

What not to expect:

  • 3DS price cut.
  • Wii U release date/price announcement.
  • Wii U name change.
  • Gameplay from Smash Bros or Zelda Wii U.
  • Wii U specs detailed.

So there you have it. Those are our predictions for what Nintendo will and won’t announce at their E3 press conference this year. As you could probably tell we expect the Wii U to be the main focus of their show, with some revelations for the 3DS and perhaps just a quick mention of the Wii or DS. We expect a plethora of juicy software announcements, from both a first and third-party perspective and we expect new basic details on the Wii U hardware. If you’re as exited about the show as we are, then keep checking our homepage which will be constantly updated with all Nintendo’s announcements during E3 week in early June.
